Our Worship

Lutheran Service Book

  All worship services here at Zion follow the liturgies printed in our synod's 2006 hymnal - Lutheran Service Book (LSB).

Holy Communion

  The Chief Service of the Church is the celebration of the Lord's Supper. We celebrate Holy Communion on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, and on Special Occasions (e.g. Christmas Day, Easter Sunday). We encourage all members to receive the blessings of the Eucharist every time it is offered.

  Both the common and individual cups are offered at the rail. If you desire the Common Cup, please indicate so by folding your hands on the communion rail as the Individual cups pass by. If you prefer the Individual Cup, please hold the cup in clear view as the Common cup passes by. Also, if you have a Physical Condition that prohibits you from coming to the rail, or from eating the bread or drinking the wine, please speak with Pastor before the service.

  We ask that members fill out a Member Card (located in the narthex or pew) and hand it to the usher as you come forward. Guests are asked to fill out a Vistor Card (located in the pew) and place it in the offering plate. All non-members are asked to speak with Pastor prior to communing. Special Services

In addition to regular Sunday services, we offer the following special services:

  1. Midweek Advent and Lenten services on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm;
  2. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services at 7:00 pm;
  3. Christmas Eve Children's Program at 5:00 pm;
  4. Christmas Day service with Holy Communion at 9:00 am; and
  5. Thanksgiving Day service at 9:00 am.

  Please note that our Customs may differ from what you are used to. For example:

  • We stand when we read the Gospel (words of Jesus) or when we sing the Doxological stanza of a hymn (i.e. giving praise to the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).
  • We begin our worship on special occasions by processing in with the Crucifix, and we ask that the congregation stand and face the cross as it passes by.

Participation

  Beyond the regular activities of confessing, listening, receiving, and singing, members are encouraged to participate in the following ways:

  • Our Adult Choir sings during worship at varying times throughout the year (see bulletin for rehearsal times).

  • As part of their instruction in the faith, our Confirmands serve as candlelighters before and after each service.

  • If you are an Organist and would like to play for a service, please contact Pastor.
  • On special occasions (e.g. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving) we invite Instrumentalists to join the organ in accompanying our songs of praise to the Lord.
  • We also invite Pianists to play a prelude, a postlude, or during the gathering of our offerings.
  • All confirmed members are asked to sign up to serve as Greeters. Responsibilities include greeting people as they enter church, handing out bulletins, gathering our offerings, ushering people out at the end of each service, and counting the money received in the offering. If you are new to Zion - this is one of the best ways to meet our members!

  • Women (age 18+) are encouraged to participate in the many opportunities offered by our LWML.
